The Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) Company has set the stage for a transformative ambitious project at its premises in Bulawayo.

The ambitious plan involves revamping the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre (ZIEC) into a modern “Smart City” dubbed ZICES (Zimbabwe International Conference and Exhibition Smart City).

This development, with a projected price tag of US$300 million, promises to revitalise the region and establish Bulawayo as a premier destination for business tourism, commerce, cultural immersion and leisure activities, according to a statement released by the company.

“The works will transform the precinct into a dynamic mixed-use development on the prime 17-acres of real estate located close to Bulawayo Central Business District,” reads the statement in part.

The ZICES masterplan represents a long-term vision for the ZIEC grounds. Far from simply being an exhibition center, ZICES will be a vibrant hub encompassing a variety of experiences.

A brand new international convention center capable of hosting up to 5,000 delegates will be the centerpiece of the development, while a 500-room hotel seamlessly connected to the convention center, is expected to eliminate the need for long commutes.

For those seeking an extra touch of luxury, a 5-star boutique hotel will cater to VIPs and visiting dignitaries.

But ZICES won’t be all business. Recognising the importance of leisure and recreation, the plan incorporates a contemporary retail complex. which will offer a diverse range of shopping, dining and entertainment options, providing a one-stop shop for residents and visitors alike.

A unique themed park is another captivating feature of the ZICES vision. This park will be a celebration of Zimbabwe’s rich heritage and landmarks.

It will weave Zimbabwe’s history and natural beauty into the visitor experience, potentially featuring iconic figures like its Kings and Queens.

Beyond leisure and entertainment, ZICES will cater to the business world as well. Modern office spaces will be built to provide a conducive environment for businesses to thrive and grow.

The development will prioritise sustainability with the inclusion of eco-friendly parks and pedestrian walkways designed to meet international standards.

While the project is ambitious, it also recognises the importance of preserving the past. The ZICES plan incorporates the careful restoration and modernisation of over 25 existing structures on the site that hold historical significance. This thoughtful approach ensures that ZICES respects its roots while embracing a modern future.

“The unveiling of the new ZITF Masterplan and Smart City represents a transformative moment for Bulawayo and underscores our commitment to driving sustainable growth and development in the region.

“By revitalising the ZICES we aim to create a vibrant hub for commerce, hospitality, and leisure, while also celebrating Zimbabwe’s rich cultural heritage,” commented Busisa Moyo, chairman of the ZITF Company.

The ZITF Company is actively engaging stakeholders to bring this vision to life. Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) are a potential model for financing key aspects of the project.

The Zimbabwean government has also pledged its support through investment incentives aligned with the country’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), which aims to propel Zimbabwe towards upper-middle-income status by 2030.
