St Ignatius College on Friday advanced to the finals of the Capital Markets High Schools Quiz Competition organised by Business Weekly and Financial Markets Indaba after beating three other schools that took part in Pool D of the competition.

Other participating schools in Pool D were Mutondwe High School, Zimuto High School and St David’s Girls High School.

Among other things, the quiz competition is meant to encourage the development of a generation that is conscious of the importance of savings, financial literacy and above all, a deeper understanding of the capital markets which will culminate in active participation in the investments world.

Capital markets regulator, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Zimbabwe (SECZim) is the headline sponsor of the quiz competition.

Other sponsors are POSB and Ecocash Holdings (Gold), First Capital Bank and Rank Zimbabwe (Silver) College Press (Bronze), Schweppes Zimbabwe, Tika Shoes, Milano, Glass Creations, Hotplate Grill, Schweppes Holdings and Delta Corporation.

By winning Pool D, St Ignatius College joins three other schools that had already made it to the finals which are set for this coming Friday.

Other schools in the finals are John Tallach High School (from Pool A), Harare-based Dominican Convent High School  (from pool B) and Bulawayo-based Dominican Convent High School (from Pool C).

Speaking on behalf of CEO Anymore Taruvinga, SecZim Head of Investor Education Farai Mpofu said the quiz programme aims to bridge the gap in financial literacy and help shape Zimbabwe’s economic development through capital markets.

She expressed her gratefulness to the schools’ authorities who allowed the students to participate in these competitions.

“The learners have exhibited preparedness and high levels of confidence as they participated in the competitions.

“A lot of learning has taken place, evidenced by the knowledge that the students have shown,” Mpofu said.

Speaking soon after the end of Pool D, Ruvimbo Ndongera from St David’s Girls High School, which came second, said she had “learnt a lot” although the competition was tough.

Her teammate, Anesu Makape said the competition was quite a good experience as they “learnt a lot”.

“I discovered that these capital markets are open to everyone. It’s quite good as they say catch them young, so we are very grateful,” said Makape.

Tinashe Chikasa from the winning St Ignatius College team said as a team they were “very lucky to be in this competition” as it provided things that are not learnt in the school curriculum.

Mpofu thanked the organisers of the quiz the Financial Markets Indaba and the Business Weekly for introducing “this important exercise not only to the capital markets but to students who have taken a stride to learn about the industry and have been able to answer questions well.

“Special thank you goes to the Zimpapers Television Network (ZTN) studios who have conducted their work professionally and have been consistent throughout the exercises.”
