A National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) train carrying chrome and granite derailed tragically on Monday evening, resulting in the deaths of three crew members.

The accident occurred around 9 pm near the town of Mutare, as the locomotive pulling 14 wagons lost control while navigating a sharp curve.

Initial investigations suggest a potential brake failure led to the runaway train plunging into a gorge.

“The National Railways of Zimbabwe would like to inform the nation of a fatal train accident which took place between Mutare and Machipanda around 2100hrs on Monday, 19 February 2024,” said the NRZ.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the locomotive, which was pulling 14 wagons laden with nine export chrome concentrates and five granite blocks, may have suffered a brake failure leading to a runaway which culminated in the train failing to negotiate a sharp curve thereby falling into the gorge.

“Sadly the three NRZ crews were trapped and could not make it to safety. Their identities cannot be divulged until their next of kin have been advised. Investigations are still underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, after which full details will be disclosed.”

“The board, management, and staff offer their sincere condolences to the families of these hardworking and dedicated crew members.”

While the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, the NRZ assured transparency by promising to disclose full details once the probe concludes.

NRZ is a State-owned enterprise that operates the country’s national railway system. It was established in 1893 and is headquartered in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The NRZ operates about 4 225 kilometers of railway line.

It plays an important role in the Zimbabwean economy, transporting both passengers and freight.
