A ray of hope shone into Gutu at Maungwa High School during the weekend of July 1st to 2nd as First Mutual Holdings sponsored a life-changing medical outreach programme. This was in partnership with Doctors and Nurses on a Mission and the Elizabeth Chanakira Trust.

The initiative impacted more than 500 patients who sought and received medical attention during the two-day outreach. The outreach provided essential healthcare services to the community, including doctors’ consultations, dental care, prostate cancer screening, cervical cancer screening, VIAC, and pharmacy services.

The dental department conducted 100 extractions, while the pharmacy administered various procedures such as drips and injections, among other essential medical interventions.

Highlighting the importance of such initiatives, Doctors and Nurses on a Mission emphasised their mandate to build healthy communities across the country.

The organisation expressed its gratitude to all the sponsors who made the Gutu outreach possible. One notable aspect of the outreach was the involvement of the Runako Project, which focuses on menstrual hygiene management. As part of the initiative, a group of 40 girls and young women from the community received training in the production and use of reusable sanitary pads.

This reproductive health and hygiene educational programme empowers participants and promotes better menstrual health practices within the community.

The medical and dental outreach in Gutu was the first of its kind to be organised within the district, bringing much-needed relief to the patients served. The event not only addressed the immediate healthcare needs of the community but also served as a testament to the power of collaboration and the generosity of sponsors in creating a healthier society.

“I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to First Mutual for the sponsorship, whose support and dedication have undoubtedly made a significant impact on the lives of the community members and will continue to inspire future initiatives to build healthier communities nationwide”, said Angels Foundation CEO and Coordinator of the outreach programme Eddie Munyoro.

The outreach had support from the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Runako, and the African Community Health Trust.

In addition to initiatives such as this one, First Mutual Holdings, through its robust corporate social responsibility programme, continues to impact positively on the future of young Zimbabweans with educational assistance and necessary ancillary services to reintegrate them into formal school as well as support for tertiary education. This is being conducted through the First Mutual Foundation, whose objective is to promote and raise the standard of living of the less privileged by availing them the opportunity to attain an education.

Additionally, the Group launched a First Mutual Africa University scholarship facility for disadvantaged students based on humanitarian need and academic excellence and is assisting six students for a period of four years on this programme.
