A total of 20 local high schools are set to battle it out in this year’s Capital Markets High Schools Quiz Competition hosted by this publication — Business Weekly in partnership with UK-headquartered Financial Markets Indaba.

The competition, which is in its second year, is an annual event that exposes high school learners to the capital markets with the aim of inculcating a culture of saving and investing.

By encouraging learners to save and invest their money, a country can boost economic growth, reduce vulnerability to shocks, improve financial stability, and increase individual wealth.

Old Mutual Zimbabwe — the headline sponsor, POSB, Milano Office Chairs, Glass Creators, Tika Shoes, Tigere Property Fund, AFC Holdings, Chicken Inn and C-Trade are among the sponsors of the 2023 edition.

The high schools’ quiz competition, which has been approved and endorsed by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, offers a unique and exciting way to motivate, inspire, encourage and reward secondary and high school scholars in their quest for knowledge and provide them with the opportunity to celebrate their achievement as part of a high profile, national competition.

The quiz fosters a generation that is conscious of the importance of savings, financial literacy and capital markets.

Participating in this year’s edition, in Pool A: are Errymaple International School, Bernard Mizeki High, Zengeza 1 High, Kriste Mambo High, and Oriel Girls High School.

Pool B consists of St Johns Emerald Hill High, Msengezi High School, Cheunje High School, Dominican Convent High School, and Marist Nyanga High School.

Harare High School, Jameson High School, Midlands Christian College, Falcon College and Marymount Mission High School represent Pool C in the competition.

Finally, the competing schools in Pool D are Irene Christian College, St Alberts High School, Silveira High School, St Dominic’s Chishawasha and Cygnet Private College.

Dominican Convent High School, Bulawayo is defending champion after scoping the tightly contested inaugural 2022 quiz competition.

In a comment, Business Weekly Editor, Herbert Zharare said “We are looking forward to hosting the High School Capital Markets Quiz at the end of September. We are very much excited with the overwhelming responses being received from stakeholders including the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the schools and our sponsors.

“The truth is the economic environment is not looking good and nearly everyone is affected in one way or the other. But the responses from all the stakeholders who are yearning to produce financially enlightened students is amazing.

“As such, we shall continue sharpening our systems and improve this
platform and ensure it attracts more stakeholders.

“To our valued supporters, we say the doors for sponsorship are still open, it’s your invaluable support that will assist us help these young minds create new career paths for themselves in the financial field,” said Mr Zharare.

Commenting on behalf of C-Trade, Zimbabwe Mercantile Exchange (ZMX) Marketing Officer Tsitsi said her organisation decided to be part of the competition as a way of promoting financial literacy and awareness among the youth, “as they represent the future generation of investors”.

“By being a part of such a competition we contribute in our small way to helping students learn about the basics of finance and investing, and encourage them to develop an interest in these topics,” said Ms Kawenda.

The High School quiz is expected to run from September 21 to 29 at the Zimpapers Television Network (ZTN) Studios Herald House, with the Television Network’s (ZTN Prime) as a media partner.
