The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) is investigating cases of money laundering on businessmen, Ewan Macmillan and Uebert Mudzanire also known as Uebert Angel, after they were implicated in snippets of a documentary prepared by international media company, Aljazeera.

Angel, also a prominent prophet, is the country’s Ambassador at Large.

As part of the process, the FIU has instructed the Insurance and Pensions Commission (IPEC) to seek from its members’ information on properties insured by the two men under investigations.

Confirming the directive, IPEC Commissioner Dr Grace Muradzikwa said; “The Insurance and Pensions Commission (the Commission) is required in terms of the Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Act [Chapter 9:24), to coordinate with Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) in the assessment of the money laundering and terrorist financing risks to which the country is exposed.

“Pursuant to the above, we are in receipt of an urgent communication from the FIU requesting all industry players to assist with information on: (i) insurance products; (ii) insured assets held or disposed, by the above-mentioned individuals directly, or indirectly through companies or trusts during the period 1 January 2020 and 21 March 2023.”

This comes after international news network Aljazeera revealed it will be broadcasting four documentary films this month exposing the depth of corruption by government officials and their affiliates.

Filming of the documentary started two years ago and chronicles natural resources plundering and money laundering in the country.

The film producers have so far shown the documentaries to a select group of corruption experts and journalists, to look at and give their comments.

A snippet of the documentary featuring Zimbabwe’s ambassador at large, Uebert Angel has gone viral on social media.

In 2015, the Spirit Embassy Church leader was dragged to court to answer on charges of fraud involving a luxury vehicle worth US$300 000.

Zimbabwe is ranked 157 least corrupt nations out of 180 countries and has a score of 23 points out of 100 according to the 2022 Corruption Perceptions Index according to Transparency International.
