Kutsaga Tobacco Research Center lauded for commitment to responsible agric practices

Kutsaga Tobacco Research Center has for long been a torchbearer of progress, aligning its mission with the agricultural priorities of driving food security and economic growth through responsible production practices, according to Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Permanent Secretary, Professor Obert Jiri.

Jiri revealed this at a field day to mark the 75th anniversary of the Kutsaga Tobacco Research Board on Thursday.

He said Kutsaga’s story is a testament to how research and innovation can transform an industry, and by extension, a nation.

“Today’s showcase is a celebration of the entire tobacco industry, a celebration of the contribution of each value chain actor in the tobacco industry.

“Seventy-five years ago, in 1950, a visionary idea took root-one that recognised tobacco not just as a crop, but as a catalyst for prosperity.

Through decades of challenges-climate change, evolving global regulations, and ecological pressures-the tobacco industry along with Kutsaga have exemplified resilience,” he said.

Jiri said his Ministry was aware of the tobacco industry ‘s significant efforts towards National Development Strategy 1 and 2, driving the country’s progress towards the aspirations of Vision 2030.

He added that with over 75 years of world class tobacco research experience especially in developing elite tobacco varieties, the institution has not only bolstered Zimbabwe’s reputation as a premier producer of high-quality, flavor-rich tobacco but also sparked transformative change at the grassroots level.

“This has empowered more than 120,000 smallholder farmers, enhancing productivity, guaranteeing access to premium markets, and subsequently, increased incomes and improved livelihoods.

“By achieving these outcomes, Kutsaga’s work embodies the Vision 2030 agenda’s core principles: shared economic growth and sustainable development.

“By turning national blueprints into tangible progress, Kutsaga ensures that no farmer or community is left behind in Zimbabwe’s journey toward sustainable development,” he said.

He hailed Kutsaga’s dedication to sustainable production practices and agricultural productivity, which has been honed through incremental gains over seven decades and is exemplified through initiatives like the development of multi-disease-resistant tobacco varieties.

Jiri said his ministry is proud to support Kutsaga’s initiatives, recognising that every stride toward sustainable agriculture is a vital step in safeguarding the livelihoods of future generations.

“By embracing innovative solutions, we can ensure a prosperous and environmentally conscious future for Zimbabwe’s tobacco industry.

“To our dedicated growers here today, thank you for being the driving force behind our tobacco industry. Your openness to embracing new ideas and innovations is what makes Kutsaga’s work truly impactful,” he said.
