Auditor General Chiri steps down

Auditor General Mildred Chiri is expected to step down at the end of this month after serving the office for nearly four decades. Chiri joined the then Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General as an audit assistant in 1983.

She rose through the ranks to the position of Comptroller and Auditor General.
She was appointed as Comptroller and Auditor-General on February 24, 2004.
With the promulgation of the new constitution of Zimbabwe, which came into effect in 2013, the title of the Comptroller and Auditor- General was changed to just Auditor General because the comptroller function was discontinued.
“Her term expires end of this month and the resignation is in line with Governance of public institutions,” said an official with Auditor General’s office.
Chiri will be remembered for boldly exposing corruption in Government ministries and local authorities.
She holds a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) and a Bachelor of Accounting degree from the University of Zimbabwe.

She is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries (FCIS).

Chiri is also a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) as well as a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CPA).

Chiri is a Registered Public Accountant (RPACC). She is a past Board member of the INTOSAI Development Initiative, an organisation that capacitates supreme Audit Institutions (Auditor Generals’ Offices) throughout the world.

The organisation is based in Oslo, Norway where board meetings are held bi-annually. Chiri served on this Board for five years from  2012 to 2016 .

She is also a member of the Governing Board of AFROSAI (African Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions). She is the immediate past vice president of AFROSAI-E (African Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions for English Speaking countries).

Chiri is the immediate past chairperson of the sub-committee of Human Resources for AFROSAI-E.
Chiri won the Chartered Secretary for the year award for 2010 which was bestowed by the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) in Zimbabwe for the role of the Auditor General’s Office in promoting transparency and accountability.

In 2016, she also received an award from Women’s Institute of Leadership, called the Women’s Top Leadership Excellence Award for the Government Sector.
