Highlanders ........................................................................................................…1 (1)

Motor Action...........................................................................................................… 0

THERE was something to finally smile about for the long-suffering Highlanders fans when their team ended an eight-match winless run with a hard-fought victory over Motor Action in a CBZ Premier Soccer League match at Barbourfields yesterday.

Cuthbert Malajila’s first half strike was all that the Bulawayo giants needed to rediscover how to win.

The victory was a huge relief to the Bosso technical team, players, executive and the fans who had watched in agony as the Bulawayo giants failed to win in their last eight assignments.

A relieved Bosso interim coach Reuben Tsengwa said perseverance had finally paid off for the team, adding that Highlanders would continue working hard for positive results.

"It was a good game for us and our patience finally paid off. We are going to continue working hard and hope to win our remaining matches and try new combinations," said Tsengwa.

He gave credit to Zephania Ngodzo and Guide Goddard for doing a sterling job in marshalling the defence and revealed that injured skipper Gilbert Banda would have to fight for the first team jersey.

"Zephania and Goddard did well in the heart of defence. It would not be easy for Gilbert when he returns as he has to work hard to get a place in the team," said Tsengwa.

The match started off on a high note with Highlanders attacking from the outset. It was from one of those early attacks that the former champions managed to grab a goal.

Malajila volleyed home from close range after two minutes from a Gift Lunga long clearance.

Lunga had cleared the ball under the challenge of Louis Matawu and Malajila outpaced Moses Williams, who should have done better to clear the ball to safety. The early goal gave Highlanders the cutting edge as they began dictating the pace of the game, but in the sixth minute Johannes Ngodzo looked in agony as his long-range shot missed the goal by inches.

Motor Action’s first attempt at goal was in the ninth minute when Warriors midfielder Clemence Matawu set up Salimu Milanzi who took a weak shot that gave Washington Arubi no problems.

The visitors’ defence of Williams and Milanzi looked shaky and had the Highlanders strike force been lethal, they could have bagged more goals.

In the 29th minute Highlanders could have doubled the scoreline after they were awarded a penalty after Milanzi brought down Douglas Zimbago in the box. Marlon Jani, who was in goal for the visitors, made a brilliant save, diving to his left to deny Johannes a goal.

Malajila, full of running the whole afternoon, failed to beat Jani in a one-on-one situation in the 35th minute.

The last five minutes of the first half saw the visitors taking the game away from Highlanders in search of an equaliser. Motor Action played some beautiful passes, keeping possession and making brilliant build-ups, but failed to find the back of the net.

Darryl Nyandoro should have levelled in the 42nd minute after being set up by Milanzi who had done well to beat Lawson Nkomo and sent in a hard and low cross, which Nyandoro, unmarked in the box, failed to connect.

In the 44th minute Simbarashe Zimora shot over the cross-bar with only Arubi to beat. The second half saw the Lindile Dube-coached Mighty Bulls returning a more determined side. The introduction of Edmore Mufema for Zimora resuscitated the Harare’s team strike force and they nearly equalised in the 55th minute when Clemence set up Mufema, but the former Dynamos striker shot over the bar.

Jacob Muzokomba, who came in for Johannes Ngodzo, could have had his name on the scoresheet but failed to connect a cross delivered by Zimbago in the 75th minute.

Louis Matawu, who had a good game, beat Richard Choruma and Lunga on the left side and released a cross for Mufema, who watched in disbelief as the woodwork denied him a goal with Arubi beaten all systems.

Mufema could have grabbed a late equaliser but lack of precision by the striker saw him head the ball wide with only Arubi to beat in the 90th minute.

Teams:

Highlanders: W. Arubi, Z. Ngodzo, G. Goddard, L. Nkomo, G. Lunga, S. Alimenda, R. Choruma, A. Mbaiwa, J. Ngodzo (J. Muzokomba 73rd min), D. Zimbago, C. Malajila

Motor Action: M. Jani, E. Tembo, R. Marere, M. Williams, L. Matawu, C. Matawu, S. Milanzi, D. Chakupa (I. Masame 53rd min), P. Mumba, S. Zimora (E. Mufema 53rd min), D. Nyandoro (L. Salous 79th min).

Lancashire Steel….............................................................(0)2 Underhill….........................................................................(0)1LANCASHIRE Steel continued with their survival series strategy when they turned on the power in the second half to dismiss a determined Underhill in a CBZ Premiership tie at Baghdad Stadium yesterday.

This was their third win in a row after they beat Masvingo 3-2 and Shooting Stars 2-1.

Having played a dull first half in which both teams failed to utilise the numerous chances they created, it was free-scoring Philip Makanje who stole the show by banging in a double to send the visitors packing.

Makanje almost scored his first in the 19th minute but his effort failed to beat the visitors’ goalkeeper Maxwell Mupanedengu.

Mhlauri launches astonishing attack on ZIFA bosses
Friday, 31 October 2008 09:11

Charles Mhlauri has called for a complete overhaul of Zimbabwe’s football management structure in the wake of the country’s failure to qualify for the African Cup of Nations and World Cup finals in 2010.

The former national team coach who was axed after Zimbabwe failed to qualify for the 2008 Nations Cup finals said it was “difficult to find any relationship between ZIFA officials and football”.

“We can look at all sorts of reasons for the state of our game that everyone else knows. The bottom line is that there are no competent administrators in Zimbabwean football,” the former AmaZulu and CAPS United coach told New Zimbabwe.com from his base in the United States.

Mhlauri led Zimbabwe to the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations finals – becoming only the second coach in history after Sunday Chidzambwa two years before him to achieve the feat.

Dynamos, returning to domestic duties a week after their African Champions League flirtation ended in the semi-finals, were stretched to the limit by the Premiership newboys and the two sides could not be separated after 120 minutes of football.

Ramos rues Keane & Berbatov exit
Thursday, 30 October 2008 14:30

Ramos was in charge at White Hart Lane for exactly a year

Former Tottenham boss Juande Ramos has admitted the loss of star strikers Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov was a major factor behind his sacking.

The departure of the pair, who scored 90 goals in their two seasons together, left Spurs short of firepower.

"The exit of Berbatov and Keane, important for their human qualities and scoring ability, was too hard a blow for the squad," he said.

Ramos was sacked at the weekend after Spurs' dismal start to the season.

Despite the club's desire to keep hold of their best players, the summer transfer window saw Keane join Liverpool and Berbatov go to Manchester United for a combined total of more than £51m.

"We had a hard pre-season which stopped us from working with the tranquility summer preparation needs," added Ramos in a statement on his personal website.

Although the club spent £14m on Roman Pavlyuchenko shortly before the close of the transfer window and took United youngster Frazier Campbell on loan, Spurs have scored just seven goals in nine Premier League games so far this season.

Ramos's last game in charge was a 2-0 Uefa Cup loss to Udinese, and on Saturday he was replaced by Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp with the club languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table.

It was a sad end to a reign which saw Ramos guide Spurs to victory in the Carling Cup last season, qualifying for Europe in the process.

And hopes were high for this season with the arrival of big-money signings Pavlyuchenko, David Bentley, Luka Modric and Giovani Dos Santos in the summer.

"The young age of some of the signings, despite their quality, means they needed some time to adapt and mature, which because of the urgency of the competitions they have not yet been awarded," said Ramos.

"All this triggered a situation which I hope will be turned around as soon as possible because the club and fans deserve it.

"Therefore, now that I say goodbye, I want to express my enormous gratitude to the Spurs fans for their excellent welcome, their respect, their kindness and even their constructive criticism.

"They have made me happy for many months and I'm only sorry I haven't been able to offer them more great evenings like the Carling Cup win at Wembley."

Ramos said he "knew the unwritten rules of football" and understood why Spurs let him go, but looked back on last season with pride.

"We arrived with the highest hopes to a team in the relegation zone, in a situation similar to that which is found at the moment, and we had a good start which saw us get to the middle of the table," he said.

"Furthermore, we were able to qualify for Europe when it seemed almost impossible. We achieved it with a great effort on the part of all the team despite the enormous difficulties that we had.

"We also achieved the difficult challenge of lifting a title, which, after nine years without tasting success, was an enormous joy for all the club and the fans.

"For this, we can catalogue last season as tremendously successful."
